SODIUM ORTHOSILICATE, TECHNICAL

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this

Commercial Item Description in preference to Federal Specification P-S-651.

This description covers sodium orthosilicate intended for laundry, metal cleaning (except aluminum) and heavy duty cleaning purposes.

Salient characteristics:

Material. Sodium orthosilicate shall be an intimate mixture of a specified ratio of anhydrous caustic soda and anhydrous sodium metasilicate. Sodium shall be in the form of free-flowing white granules or flakes which have been treated with an anti-dusting oil.

The issues of ASTM standards in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.

Anti-dusting oil. The anti-dusting oil shall conform to the National Formulary requirements for Light Mineral Oil except that it shall have a specific gravity of 0.820 at 25^oC (77^oF) and a viscosity of 50 to 100 Saybolt Universal seconds at 37.78^oC (100^oF). The anti-dusting oil shall be not less than 0.30 percent by weight in the sodium orthosilicate.

Particle size. No more than one percent by weight of the sodium orthosilicate shall be retained on a No. 8 sieve and no less than 95 percent by weight shall be retained on a No. 80 sieve when tested as specified in Fed. Test Method Std. No. 536, Method 2101.

Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. The preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
