1. Scope. This commercial item description covers two types of sodium carbonate intended for various washing processes, with or without soap as conditions may require, when a moderately strong alkaline material is required and for the treatment of water.
2. Types and classes.
Type I – Light
Type II – Dense
3. Salient characteristics,
3.1 Material. The sodium carbonate shall be a white, crystalline solid and shall conform to the physical and chemical requirements of Table I when tested as specified in ASTM D 501. (applicable sections listed)

NOTE: The contractor may use his normal quality assurance procedure for manufacture of this product; however, should a disagreement arise between the Government and its costumer or between the Government and the manufacturer concerning compliance to the salient characteristics of this commercial item description. The test methods and tests stated in his commercial item description will be used to determine compliance of the product.
3. Product Conformance. The Products provided shall meet the salient characteristics of this commercial item description, conform to the producer’s own drawings, specifications, standards, and quality assurance practices and be the same product offered for sale in the commercial market. The Government reserves the right to require proof such conformance.
